A huge fire lit up the night sky in Los Angeles on Thursday after an explosion at a Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, a suburb south of the city. Authorities in El Segundo asked residents to stay indoors while firefighters worked to control the blaze.
Residents Share Scenes of Fire and Smoke
Videos shared on social media showed tall flames and thick smoke rising from the refinery. A loud rumbling noise was heard for several minutes. “I thought we got nuked or something,” said Mike Rogers, a resident. His adult soccer league match had to be canceled due to the heavy smoke from the fire.
Authorities Confirm No Evacuations or Injuries
About 30 minutes after the fire started, officials said there was no immediate danger to public safety. No evacuations were ordered, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Chevron and local authorities have not provided any explanation for what triggered the explosion.
LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell said firefighter crews successfully contained the fire to one area of the refinery. “It has been contained, and there is no cause for alarm for El Segundo or the surrounding areas,” Mitchell said.
Governor’s Office Responds
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said he was briefed on the incident. His team is coordinating with local and state agencies to protect the community and ensure safety.
