Carney Rejects Trump’s Claim Canada “Lives Because of the U.S.,” Says Canada Thrives on Its Own Values

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sharply rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s comment that “Canada lives because of the United States,” asserting that Canada thrives because of its own values, identity and democratic society. Carney’s remarks came after he returned home from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where his speech warning about the erosion of the rules-based international order drew global attention.

Trump, in his own address at Davos, had said Canada should be grateful for its relationship with the United States, claiming Canada “gets a lot of freebies” and suggesting Canada “lives because of the United States.” Trump also later withdrew Carney’s invitation to join his newly announced Board of Peace, a U.S.-led initiative aimed at global conflict resolution.

In response, Carney emphasized that while Canada and the U.S. have built a “remarkable partnership” in areas such as the economy, security and cultural exchange, Canada’s success stems from its own strengths. “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” he said at a cabinet retreat in Quebec City, asserting Canada’s sovereignty and the agency of its people in shaping their future.

Carney’s rebuttal underscored broader tensions between the two allies following his Davos remarks — in which he criticised economic coercion by powerful states without naming Trump but clearly alluding to shifting global dynamics. The prime minister also pointed to Canada’s commitment to pluralism, inclusivity and democratic governance as central to the nation’s resilience.

The exchange reflects a growing diplomatic strain between Ottawa and Washington, as Canada seeks to balance its longstanding partnership with the United States while asserting an independent voice on global affairs and defending its sovereignty in the face of controversial U.S. rhetoric.
