Trump Revokes Canada's Invitation to Join Peace Board

In a significant diplomatic shift, former US President Donald Trump has retracted the invitation given to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to participate in the proposed “Board of Peace.” This development exacerbates the ongoing tensions between both political figures.

The announcement was made late Thursday (local time), shortly after Carney's administration affirmed its position against financing its inclusion in the initiative, which Trump envisions as a crucial international effort to mitigate global conflicts.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump articulated his rationale clearly, stating that the Board of Peace would no longer extend an invitation to Canada, which he labeled as “the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”

This conflict adds a new layer to the escalating verbal exchanges between Washington and Ottawa, beginning earlier this week during the World Economic Forum in Davos. During the forum, Carney highlighted a “rupture” in the US-led global order, suggesting that Canada, once benefiting under US dominance, must now navigate a transformed geopolitical landscape where “compliance” is no longer a safeguard against major powers' aggression.

Trump countered almost immediately, ridiculing Carney's remarks by asserting, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

In a swift response, Carney refuted Trump's claims on Thursday, stating, “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States; it thrives because we are Canadian.”

This dialogue highlights the increasingly polarized relationship between the two leaders, despite the longstanding trade partnership and alliance between Canada and the United States.

What is the ‘Board of Peace’?

Originally intended to oversee the reconstruction of war-ravaged Gaza, the “Board of Peace” has a much broader mission. The organization's founding charter describes it as an international entity that aims to foster stability, restore governance, and achieve enduring peace in regions affected by conflict.

The charter further clarifies that the organization will conduct peace-building efforts in alignment with international law and will focus on areas beyond just Palestinian territories.

Nonetheless, the proposal has encountered skepticism from various nations. Canada's decision not to contribute financially is believed to be the catalyst for Trump's retraction of the invitation.
