Canada funds Arctic Training Hub for Defence Jobs

The Government of Canada has announced new funding to support economic growth and defence readiness in the Arctic, with a focus on empowering Indigenous communities and local businesses. The initiative aims to prepare northern regions for increased defence-related activities while creating long-term employment opportunities.

The funding, announced by Rebecca Chartrand, will provide up to $1.5 million over three years to establish the Nihtat Operations, Readiness & Training Hub (NORTH) in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. The project will be led by the Nihtat Gwich’in Council and is designed to equip local workers and businesses with the skills needed to participate in defence contracts and related industries.

The NORTH hub will focus on practical training areas such as supplier readiness, procurement processes, document management, and cybersecurity. It will also provide targeted skills development programs to ensure that local residents are prepared for emerging job opportunities linked to defence activities in the region.

Officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen Canada’s presence in the Arctic, both economically and strategically. By improving regional readiness, the government aims to ensure that northern communities can directly benefit from increased investment in defence infrastructure and operations.

The program is supported through the Regional Defence Investment Initiative, which is designed to integrate local businesses into domestic and international defence supply chains. This approach is expected to help northern enterprises expand their capabilities while contributing to national security goals.

In addition to federal funding, the Nihtat Gwich’in Council is contributing $375,000 to the project, demonstrating strong local commitment. Leaders from the council said the hub will play a key role in supporting economic self-sufficiency and ensuring that Indigenous communities can actively participate in future development in the North.

Government officials also emphasized that investing in people is just as important as investing in infrastructure. The initiative is expected to create a skilled workforce, strengthen local economies, and generate sustainable growth across the Arctic region.
