Belinda Bencic advanced to the final of the Pan Pacific Open with a hard-fought victory over Sofia Kenin, winning 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-2 on Saturday. This marks Bencic's second final appearance at this tournament, a decade after her first participation. The Swiss star displayed incredible determination and resilience, keeping her championship dreams alive as she aims for her second title this season.
The match took place under the protective roof at Ariake Coliseum due to rainy conditions, with both players initially holding strong serves throughout the first set. A fiercely contested tiebreak saw Bencic elevate her game at a critical moment, securing the first set 7-6(5) with a stellar forehand winner, giving her a vital edge.
Kenin’s Resilient Comeback
Former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin rallied back in the second set. She managed to break Bencic's serve early on and overcame a slight hiccup on her serve in the following game. Kenin's aggressive style helped her clinch the second set 6-3, leveling the match and compelling a decisive third set.
In the final set, Bencic regained control, breaking Kenin for a 3-1 lead. Despite a few errors from both players, the experience and composure of the 28-year-old Swiss athlete shone through as she wrapped up the decider 6-2. This victory brings her one step closer to her second WTA title of the year.
Noskova Advances to the Final
Bencic's opponent in the final will be Linda Noskova, who reached this stage following a walkover. Noskova's intended opponent, Elena Rybakina, withdrew from their semi-final due to a back injury. Rybakina had solidified her spot at the upcoming WTA Finals in Riyadh by reaching the Tokyo semi-finals.
Noskova, who was recently the runner-up at the China Open against Amanda Anisimova, is aiming for her second career WTA title. She previously won the Monterrey Open last year and hopes to carry her successful momentum forward as she takes on Bencic in the final.
The final of the Pan Pacific Open is set to deliver an exhilarating showdown between the seasoned Bencic and the promising Noskova. With both players showcasing impressive form, fans are in for a competitive match as Bencic pursues her second title of the season while Noskova seeks to make a statement.
