Hollywood welcomed the world premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash on Monday, marking the arrival of the third chapter in James Cameron’s blockbuster franchise.

The red carpet featured stars Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and director James Cameron. Returning favorites Jake Sully (Worthington), Neytiri (Saldaña), and Kiri (Weaver) share the spotlight with new characters, including the villainous Varang, played by Oona Chaplin.

Set in Pandora, the story introduces an aggressive new tribe and places more female characters at the center of the action. Saldaña praised Cameron’s inclusive approach: “He is never afraid to cast great people in his projects, regardless of race or gender. We are all in Pandora trying to tell an amazing story.”

Worthington said the film builds on familiar characters but brings heightened stakes and surprises. Cameron added that he remains emotionally connected to the story: “Up until before I started mixing the movie, I could still cry in the scenes where you’re supposed to cry, and there are about five of them in this film.”

Weaver remarked that the film reflects current global challenges: “It’s a difficult, challenging time, and there’s a lot of heartbreak.”

The action-packed story promises twists and unexpected moments. Jack Champion, reprising his role as Spider, teased, “Expect the unexpected because what you think is going to happen is not going to happen. Everything is just going to go pretty bonkers.”

Composer Simon Franglen shared insights into the film’s extensive score, which spans more than three hours: “I have written 1,904 pages of music for this film.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to premiere in theaters on December 19.
