Veteran actor and beloved comedian Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away at the age of 84 on Monday after a long illness. His death brought sadness to the film industry and his fans.
A video recently surfaced showing Asrani dancing at an event just 10 days before he died. Singer Pinky Maidasani shared the clip on Instagram, showing Asrani standing with help at first and then breaking into joyful dance to a Sindhi song. Pinky wrote, “Last event just 10 days back he was on stage and dancing… a true gem artist, our own legend, Asrani saheb.”
Fans flooded the post with tributes, remembering him as an entertainer and a great actor. Comments included: “Bless his soul,” “He was our smile,” and “Jeena issi ka naam hai (That’s how you live).”
Asrani’s manager said he passed away at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. His last rites were held at Santacruz Crematorium. He is survived by his wife, Manju Asrani, his sister, and his nephew.
Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Asrani appeared in over 350 films. He was known for his comic timing and expressive acting. His role as the jail warden in the 1975 classic Sholay is still remembered today. In recent years, he appeared in films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhamaal, Bunty Aur Babli 2, R... Rajkumar, All The Best, and Welcome.
