Air Transat announced a phased suspension of its operations over the next three days following a 72-hour strike notice from its pilots’ union, potentially starting Wednesday morning.
The airline called the strike notice “premature” and highlighted ongoing progress in contract negotiations, including “generous” offers to pilots. Both sides stated an agreement could still be reached before the strike begins.
Flights will begin being suspended on Monday, with a full halt on Tuesday. Passengers abroad will be repatriated to prevent anyone from being stranded.
The pilots’ union said months of stalled negotiations left them no choice but to issue a strike mandate. The dispute centers on pay, benefits, work rules, and job security in a new contract to replace the existing 2015 agreement.
Travelers expressed concern over potential disruptions, with some choosing to rebook flights with other airlines. Federal mediators are closely monitoring the situation to help both sides reach a resolution quickly.
Air Passenger Rights experts noted that passengers may be entitled to up to $1,000 in compensation if flights are canceled before the strike within 14 days of departure.
Air Transat serves 10 domestic and 63 international destinations across Europe, the Caribbean, the U.S. East Coast, South America, and North Africa.
