Incident Involving Air India Express Flight in Oman

A Boeing 737-800 operated by Air India Express experienced substantial damage while preparing for its flight from Muscat to Kannur in Kerala. The incident occurred on the evening of May 15 when the aircraft veered off the runway and hit the runway edge lights at Muscat International Airport, prompting an official investigation by Omani authorities.

As the plane began its takeoff sequence, it accelerated onto runway 26L from taxiway E7, unexpectedly colliding with the lights. This collision caused damage to the aircraft’s nose landing gear and created operational challenges, leading pilots to abort the takeoff for safety.

Following the impact, pilots reported a loud noise from the front of the aircraft. After the emergency halt, technical teams assessed the situation and found various types of damage, such as a hydraulic leak and a flat tire. Furthermore, it was revealed that debris had entered both engines, leading to serious internal damage.

Passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft while it remained on the runway. Emergency teams quickly arrived on-site to secure the area and assist in transporting those on board back to the terminal. Fortunately, no significant injuries were reported during this process.

The aircraft was kept grounded for days while safety checks were conducted. In response, Air India Express arranged a replacement Boeing 737-800 to transport the stranded passengers to Kerala, although this flight was delayed by over thirteen hours.

Oman's Air Accidents Investigation Sector has categorized this event as an aviation accident, sparking an in-depth inquiry. Investigators will review runway conditions, aircraft handling procedures, cockpit interactions, and any technical or operational issues linked to the incident.

Air India Express has expressed commitment to working closely with the Oman Transport Safety Bureau during the investigation. The airline has also ensured that affected passengers received alternative travel arrangements and accommodations to reduce any inconvenience caused by the incident.
