As the new year dawns, New York City embraces its new mayor. Zohran Mamdani, 34, a former state lawmaker, assumes office blending tradition with a touch of innovation. In keeping with legal requirements, the mayoral term begins on January 1. To ensure clarity in leadership, New York has a longstanding tradition of conducting an official swearing-in at midnight.
