The incident happened at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, a city in southwestern Washington known for its paper and timber industries. Authorities said the situation quickly turned into a “mass casualty” emergency as rescue workers struggled to reach several trapped employees inside the damaged area.

According to officials, the implosion occurred Tuesday morning inside a giant storage tank containing nearly 900,000 gallons of a highly corrosive chemical mixture known as “white liquor,” which is commonly used in the paper-making process. The powerful collapse caused severe structural damage and released dangerous chemicals around the facility. Emergency crews, firefighters, and hazardous material teams rushed to the scene within minutes, but unstable conditions made rescue efforts extremely difficult.

Authorities confirmed that at least nine other workers were injured in the accident, including one firefighter who responded to the emergency. Community members also held candlelight vigils for the victims as fear and uncertainty spread through the town.

Washington state officials, including Governor Bob Ferguson and several federal representatives, expressed condolences to the families affected by the disaster and promised a full investigation into the incident.
