In a recent alert, the Dubai Police cautioned residents about an escalating holiday home rental fraud after a man lost AED 8,000 trying to secure an online chalet. This alarming incident underscores growing concerns surrounding fraud during the festive season in Dubai.
Reports indicate that the victim responded to an online ad for a holiday chalet and was instructed to remit a deposit along with an insurance fee. He transferred a total of AED 8,000 to finalize the booking. Subsequently, the scammer became uncontactable after the payment, prompting the victim to approach the authorities.
Dubai Police informed that scammers often prey on individuals searching for holiday bargains online. They frequently employ counterfeit images, irresistible pricing, and urgent prompts to compel victims into making hasty payments without validating the property’s legitimacy. Many victims only discover the deceit after the funds are sent.
Officials noted that these fraudsters thrive during peak holiday periods when the demand for short-term rentals surges. They caution that offers that seem “too good to be true” are likely scams. Residents are urged to exercise vigilance while engaging with unknown advertisers across social media and online marketplaces.
Dubai Police recommend that individuals always confirm property details, verify the identity of the owner, and physically inspect the location prior to making any financial commitments. The importance of utilizing authorized rental sites and formal contracts is also emphasized to minimize fraud risk.
Continuing their outreach, authorities are promoting the “Be Aware of Fraud” initiative. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity via official channels, such as the e-Crime platform or by calling 901. This warning about holiday home rental scams aims to safeguard residents and diminish online fraud occurrences throughout the city.
