Virat Kohli Discusses His Future and the 2027 ODI World Cup

In a candid revelation, Virat Kohli expressed that he feels he has nothing to demonstrate in international cricket. He stated that he will contemplate playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup only if he believes he can meaningfully support Team India.

At 37, the seasoned player remains focused on One-Day Internationals (ODIs) after stepping back from T20 Internationals post India’s triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup. He also retired from Test cricket last year, concluding his journey after 123 matches.

During a podcast for his IPL team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli affirmed his dedication to performing at his best for India. Yet, he emphasized that he wouldn't want to play merely to validate himself.

Kohli mentioned that if he finds a way to add value to the team and the management trusts him, he would be open to selection. However, he clarified that he doesn’t want to face ongoing scrutiny about his contributions.

The former captain remarked that he gives his full effort on the field, whether batting, fielding, or running. He approaches each game as if it could be his last and prepares rigorously.

Expressing his views on trust, Kohli stated that once a player has consistently delivered for the team, questions regarding their value become redundant. He believes players should either be fully trusted or openly informed if their services are no longer needed.

Despite receiving criticism for inconsistency last year, including back-to-back ducks against Australia, Kohli made a formidable comeback, demonstrating his skill in matches against South Africa and New Zealand.

In the previous year, Kohli featured in 13 ODIs, accumulating 651 runs. He has also had a robust start to the ongoing IPL season, having already reached a century.

Recognized as one of the all-time greats in ODI cricket, Kohli has amassed 14,797 runs over 311 ODIs, averaging 58.71. He trails only Sachin Tendulkar, who leads with 18,426 runs.

The upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup is set to take place across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia during October and November next year.
