On Sunday, Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli made headlines by becoming the fastest cricketer to accumulate 28,000 runs in all international formats. This milestone was achieved during the first ODI against New Zealand, placing him just behind Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time run-scoring chart.
Kohli reached this impressive total in his 624th innings, marking the moment with a boundary off New Zealand’s leg-spinner Adithya Ashok. Tendulkar, on the other hand, reached this milestone in 644 innings, while Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara accomplished it in 666 innings.
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Kohli mentioned it felt like “a dream come true.” He expressed his sincere gratitude for his ability to bring happiness to his fans through cricket. “I feel immensely blessed to have had this journey and the opportunity to make fans smile,” he noted.
After scoring 93 runs off 91 balls, Kohli was named player of the match for the 45th time, playing a pivotal role in India’s triumph. He emphasized that his primary focus was on the game rather than personal records. “I put myself under pressure while playing to my strengths,” he added.
Discussing his role batting at number three, Kohli mentioned that it involves counter-attacking when needed while also being disciplined. He shared that this approach has allowed him to establish vital partnerships and contribute positively to matches.
Kohli also revealed he sends his trophies back home to his mother in Gurgaon, who cherishes collecting them. Regarding the crowd’s reaction when he walked out to bat after Rohit Sharma was dismissed, he acknowledged their excitement while expressing empathy for the players departing the field.
India’s captain Shubman Gill praised Kohli's outstanding form, stating, “These pitches present significant challenges, yet he makes batting appear seamless. I hope he continues to score heavily.” Kohli affirmed that maintaining focus on the present is crucial for any athlete.
