Vietnam's Vision for Sustainable Oceans and Green Growth

During World Environment Day and World Ocean Day, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized the need for robust national and global initiatives aimed at environmental preservation, accelerating green transformation, and ensuring the sustainability of oceans. He stated that environmental protection should serve as a fundamental aspect of economic development and national security.

Noting the unprecedented environmental hurdles facing the globe—including climate change, rising sea levels, diminishing biodiversity, extreme weather, and escalating marine pollution—President To Lam cautioned that reliance on resource-heavy development could jeopardize both economic vitality and the ecological frameworks supporting human existence.

Vietnam faces particularly pressing challenges, with its 3,260 kilometers of coastline and millions residing in coastal and river delta areas making it susceptible to climate change, saltwater intrusion, coastal erosion, and natural disasters. The government asserts that integrating environmental protection into economic planning is vital for achieving sustainable development.

The President reaffirmed Vietnam's pledge to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and promote renewable energy, tackle plastic pollution, safeguard biodiversity, and enhance the circular economy. He emphasized that green growth should be regarded not as an external expectation but as a strategic imperative for Vietnam's future prosperity and competitive edge.

A central component of this strategy involves cultivating a modern, sustainable marine economy. Vietnam aims to expand green seaports, initiate offshore renewable energy projects, explore marine biotechnology, develop eco-tourism, and implement sustainable fisheries management. The government also intends to intensify its crackdown on illegal fishing while protecting marine ecosystems and supporting coastal community livelihoods.

The article further highlights the necessity of restoring forests, wetlands, and other natural ecosystems, while bolstering climate resilience in at-risk areas. Investments in environmental monitoring, AI technology, digital mapping, and climate forecasting are projected to enhance environmental governance and disaster readiness.

President To Lam concluded by calling for collective dedication from governments, businesses, communities, and individuals. He urged Vietnamese citizens to engage in practical actions like tree planting, minimizing single-use plastics, conserving energy, protecting water resources, and adopting more sustainable lifestyles to forge a cleaner, safer, and sustainable future for the country.
