Vietnam Maintains 0% Registration Fee for EVs Until 2030

Vietnam has revealed a significant initiative for electric vehicle purchasers by prolonging the 0% initial registration fee for battery-operated cars until December 31, 2030. This initiative aims to hasten the nation's shift towards greener transportation and mitigate environmental pollution.

The policy emerged via Government Decree 202/2026/ND-CP, released on June 8, 2026. This decree modifies existing vehicle registration laws and sustains the benefits for electric vehicles, permitting buyers to register without paying the initial fee.

As stated by Vietnamese officials, this extension is part of an overarching plan to motivate consumers to transition from conventional gasoline vehicles to eco-friendly options. Authorities feel this measure will assist in lowering emissions, enhancing air quality, and supporting national climate initiatives.

The government pointed out that earlier incentives introduced in 2022 had already yielded positive outcomes. These policies boosted consumer interest, urged manufacturers to expand their offerings, and fortified the domestic electric mobility sector.

According to Vietnam's Ministry of Finance, the global electric vehicle industry has witnessed swift growth in recent years. Global EV sales surpassed 17 million units in 2024, anticipated to exceed 20 million in 2025, showcasing an increasing movement towards sustainable transport options.

Officials emphasized the necessity of alleviating cost barriers for consumers. Registration fee waivers and tax relief have become prevalent tools employed by governments globally to enhance electric vehicle adoption and foster charging infrastructure development.

This new decree aims to instill long-term trust among consumers, manufacturers, and investors while aiding Vietnam in promoting its green transportation objectives. Authorities believe this extension will significantly aid in expediting the transition to cleaner mobility and achieving sustainable economic aims.
