On the morning of May 2, 2026, Le Minh Hung formally welcomed Japan's Takaichi Sanae at the Government headquarters in Hanoi. This visit marks a significant official trip from May 1 to May 3, following an invitation extended by Vietnam's Prime Minister.
Notably, this is Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae's first visit to any country in the region since his re-election earlier in February 2026. It underscores Japan's commitment to deepening its ties with Vietnam in this new chapter of bilateral relations.
The atmosphere during the welcoming ceremony was both warm and respectful, highlighting camaraderie. Young children from Hanoi greeted the Japanese Prime Minister with flowers, enhancing the positive vibe of the occasion. The leaders then proceeded to the honorary platform for the official proceedings.
As part of the ceremony, military bands played the anthems of both nations, and the Prime Ministers paid tribute to the military flag while observing the Honor Guard of the Vietnam People’s Army—a traditional gesture denoting mutual respect between the two countries.
Following the formalities, a private meeting took place between the two Prime Ministers, later joined by senior officials for higher-level discussions. Their agenda included reviewing prior collaborations and making plans for future cooperation in significant sectors.
Expanding cooperation in essential areas such as trade, investment, technology, and sustainable energy is planned. Topics like green transformation, digital advancements, food security, and scientific cooperation are seen as essential for driving future growth.
The bond between Vietnam and Japan has evolved significantly over the past 50 years, making it one of the most notable partnerships in the region, founded on profound political trust. The establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023 further solidified the ties between both nations.
Economic collaboration continues to flourish, with bilateral trade hitting approximately 52 billion USD in 2025, marking an increase from the previous year. Japan remains a primary investor in Vietnam, contributing via foreign direct investments and development aid.
Significantly, the growing Vietnamese community in Japan, now over 680,000 strong, presents another layer of connection between the two countries. This visit is poised to create fresh opportunities for deeper collaboration, further promoting peace and stability in the region.
