In a significant move, the Venezuelan government has released 88 more detainees related to the protests stemming from the July 2024 elections. This marks the second mass release in just two weeks, following the earlier discharge of 99 individuals on December 26, totaling 187 freed.
An official statement from the government indicates that these detentions are part of a “comprehensive review process” instituted by President Nicolas Maduro. The statement also suggests that this evaluation is ongoing, aimed at reassessing the cases of those held during the post-election disturbances.
The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, a local non-governmental organization, has confirmed the release of at least 55 individuals, primarily from Tocoron prison in central Venezuela.
Nonetheless, several NGOs express doubt regarding the official numbers, questioning whether the full claimed figures have been accurate. Independent sources estimate that around 900 political prisoners still remain incarcerated in Venezuela, including many detained before the July election.
The Venezuelan authorities assert that they do not hold political prisoners but rather individuals charged with attempts to undermine the government through unlawful activities. This perspective continues to fuel tension between the government and various human rights organizations.
These recent releases occur amidst growing pressure from the United States, where the Trump administration has called for President Maduro to step down. The US has increased its military presence in the Caribbean, launched attacks on drug trafficking vessels near Venezuela’s shores, and seized two crude oil tankers, escalating diplomatic tensions considerably.
