V.D. Satheesan Launches Discussions on Kerala Government Formation

Post by : Shakul

The newly appointed Chief Minister-designate of Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, has commenced important discussions aimed at establishing the state's new government. Following his official selection by the Congress leadership for the top position, political movements in Thiruvananthapuram ramped up on May 15, 2026, with senior United Democratic Front members convening to deliberate on the future Cabinet's structure and representation of allied parties.

In line with these consultations, Satheesan met with former Chief Minister and current Opposition leader, Pinarayi Vijayan, at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram—drawing significant political attention as Kerala heads into a new governance era post-Assembly election results declared earlier this month.

Following nearly ten days of uncertainty after the elections, the All India Congress Committee officially announced Satheesan as the Chief Ministerial nominee on May 14. This choice concluded intense internal debates among senior Congress members vying for the leadership role.

Senior Congress politician Ramesh Chennithala, once a viable candidate for the Chief Minister position, has publicly pledged his support for Satheesan. This gesture is viewed by party leaders as a step toward enhancing unity and bolstering the UDF alliance ahead of the government formation.

UDF leaders are actively engaging in critical discussions regarding Cabinet positions and the representation of coalition partners. Anoop Jacob, leader of the Kerala Congress (Jacob), remarked that UDF allies anticipate equitable representation in the Cabinet, and talks regarding ministerial roles will persist during forthcoming leadership meetings.

Many Congress members commended Satheesan's leadership qualities, expressing optimism about his future administration. Senior leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan emphasized that Satheesan possesses the vision and competence to effectively lead Kerala as Chief Minister.

Addressing the media, Satheesan highlighted the necessity of safeguarding Kerala's secular values, asserting that the election results mirrored public support for these principles. He cautioned against any attempts to sow discord and division within the state.

Additionally, the Chief Minister-designate underscored his government's commitment to alleviating the cost of living and tackling economic challenges stemming from rising fuel prices spurred by regional tensions. He assured that the new administration would aim to lessen the financial load on citizens and enhance public welfare throughout Kerala.

The UDF leadership is anticipated to finalize the overarching structure of the Cabinet soon, paving the way for the alliance to officially take office and embark on a fresh political journey in Kerala.
