US West braces for first major snowfall icy roads and travel risks

Four U.S. states—Alaska, Oregon, Montana, and California—are bracing for the first significant snowfall of the season, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of slippery roads, travel disruptions, and rapidly dropping temperatures.

Alaska: Icy Roads and Winter Advisory

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Alaska, issued by the NWS office in Fairbanks on Wednesday. Residents have been warned about icy roads and snow-covered surfaces. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

NWS Fairbanks posted on social media:

"Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions."

Snow Forecasts Across the West and Midwest

Oregon: Snowfall is expected above 5,000 feet in the Cascade Mountains, marking the season’s first snow. Up to a foot of snow could accumulate near Timberline Lodge, with conditions continuing into the weekend. Outdoor enthusiasts and hunters are advised to exercise caution.

Montana: A more intense winter system is expected this weekend, with up to 10 inches of snow in Glacier National Park and surrounding areas. Lower elevations, such as the Bitterroot Mountains, may see up to 8 inches, creating hazardous mountain roads.

NWS Missoula noted on X:

"Next winter-like system begins by Friday, with snow levels lowering overnight Saturday. Some seasonal non-paved mountain passes may become snow-covered and slick by Sunday morning."

Northern California: Snow is projected early next week, with higher elevations likely to receive snow on Monday and Tuesday, while lower valleys experience rain. The storm may disrupt travel on key mountain routes.

Safety and Preparedness

Residents and travelers are urged to remain alert to local advisories and prepare for sudden weather changes, especially in mountainous regions and higher elevations.
