US Puts 1,500 Soldiers on Standby for Possible Minneapolis Deployment

The U.S. Department of Defense has placed around 1,500 active-duty soldiers on standby for a possible deployment to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where large protests and ongoing unrest have drawn national attention.

Two battalions from the 11th Airborne Division, which are trained for operations in cold weather, have been ordered to be ready to move if conditions worsen or if federal or state authorities formally request additional support to help manage the situation in and around Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The troop readiness action comes amid weeks of demonstrations in response to federal immigration enforcement actions, including clashes between protesters and agents from U.S. agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Border Patrol. Thousands of law enforcement personnel have already been deployed in the region.

Officials emphasize that these soldiers are not yet deployed; they have received “prepare-to-deploy” orders as a precautionary measure to ensure rapid support if needed. Under U.S. law, the use of active-duty military forces for domestic law enforcement is highly restricted and would typically require a legal authorization such as invocation of the Insurrection Act or a specific request from state authorities.

Local leaders and civil liberties advocates have expressed concern over the potential use of federal troops in a domestic context, warning it could escalate tensions. Supporters of the federal response argue that additional personnel might be necessary if protests lead to greater instability or violence.

The situation remains fluid, with authorities continuing efforts to manage protests and public safety while balancing legal limitations on the use of military forces within the United States
