In a significant move to bolster its defenses, South Korea is on the verge of enhancing its military arsenal following the United States' approval of a $4.2 billion defense agreement. The US State Department has given the green light for the potential transfer of MH-60R multi-mission naval helicopters and an upgrade initiative for AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.
As per reports from Yonhap News Agency, the proposed Foreign Military Sale (FMS) incorporates MH-60R Seahawk helicopters priced around $3 billion. These state-of-the-art helicopters are crafted for various roles, including anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, surveillance, search and rescue, among other naval operations.
Additionally, the package includes an upgrade program valued at $1.2 billion for South Korea’s existing AH-64E Apache helicopters. This enhancement is anticipated to significantly boost their combat capability, operational efficiency, and advanced engagement features.
According to the US State Department, the proposed sales aim to reinforce South Korea’s defense framework while enhancing the security of a crucial ally in the Asian region. This approval arrives amid escalating security tensions within the Indo-Pacific landscape.
Further discussions and approval steps will now take place to finalize the agreement between the two nations.
