A diplomatic dispute has unfolded publicly online between the United States and Poland after Washington announced it would cut off communication with a senior Polish lawmaker over insulting remarks about U.S. President Donald Trump, according to officials and social media exchanges.
The conflict became evident when U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose declared that the U.S. would have “no further dealings, contacts, or communications” with Włodzimierz Czarzasty, the speaker of the Sejm (Poland’s lower house of parliament), citing what he described as “outrageous and unprovoked insults” directed at Trump. Rose’s comments were posted on social media, framing the move as necessary to protect U.S.–Poland relations and to defend the U.S. president’s reputation.
Rose did not specify the exact remarks that triggered the response but asserted that Czarzasty had become a “serious impediment” to solid relations with both the U.S. and the Polish government under Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In subsequent exchanges, Rose emphasised that undermining or disrespecting the U.S. president — whom he described as “a great friend of Poland” — was unacceptable from Poland’s parliamentary leadership.
Czarzasty later responded, saying the dispute began after he refused to support efforts to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, a proposal championed by some U.S. lawmakers and foreign counterparts. He maintained that, in line with his values, he could not back the nomination while also expressing respect for the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk intervened in the social media exchange, urging that allies should show mutual respect rather than “lecture” each other — a message he framed as consistent with Poland’s view of a partner relationship. Rose replied with praise for Tusk’s leadership but reiterated his frustration with Czarzasty’s comments, saying they risked harming broader bilateral ties.
The online spat highlights the sensitive nature of diplomatic relations between allies, particularly when political disagreements spill into public forums. Both the U.S. and Poland have maintained strategic cooperation on security issues, economic ties and support for Ukraine, but this recent exchange underscores how political rhetoric can quickly escalate into broader diplomatic friction.
As officials monitor reactions in both capitals, the incident serves as a reminder that social media statements from diplomats and lawmakers can carry significant weight in international relations and may have repercussions beyond immediate political circles.
