Ukraine Achieves Historic Naval Victory by Striking Russian Submarine with Drone

Post by : Raina Carter

Ukraine has made a groundbreaking move by successfully hitting a Russian Kilo-class attack submarine with underwater drones, as confirmed by Ukrainian officials on Monday. This operation, executed by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) using their specialized "Sub Sea Baby" drones, targeted the submarine at its dock in Novorossiysk, a crucial naval base for Russia in the Black Sea. Many Russian naval assets had been relocated to this site to protect them from Ukrainian assaults.

Video evidence released by the SBU depicted a significant explosion near the pier where the submarine and other vessels were docked. Reuters corroborated the video's authenticity by matching the port's piers and facilities layout. Alexander Kamyshin, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, stated on the social media platform X that this incident marks the first recorded instance of an underwater drone effectively neutralizing a submarine.

Despite having a minimal naval fleet of its own, Ukraine has been increasingly leveraging sea drones and long-range missives to confront Russia's Black Sea Fleet. The diesel-electric submarine that was targeted in Novorossiysk has the capacity to carry a minimum of four Kalibr-type cruise missiles, which form a critical part of Russia's recent attacks on Ukraine that have inflicted significant damage on the country's power infrastructure. Following Ukraine's repeated strikes on Russian combatants in Sevastopol, the submarine was relocated from Crimea to avoid further risks.

The Ukrainian navy referred to the submarine strike as “another pivotal moment” in the ongoing naval conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Dmytro Pletenchuk, a naval spokesperson, emphasized that hitting a submarine—considered one of the most challenging targets—significantly shifts the dynamics of naval combat. He noted that repairing the damaged submarine would be complicated, as it would necessitate above-water maintenance, exposing it to additional attacks. Consequently, Russia has now lost one of its four submarines positioned in Novorossiysk, three of which are armed with Kalibr missiles.

This strategic attack occurs amid delicate US-brokered peace talks, with Ukrainians expressing concerns about potential pressures to reach agreements that may undermine their sovereignty. By showcasing its ability to engage and damage high-value Russian naval assets, Ukraine seeks to bolster its negotiating position and reaffirm its capability to protect its territory.

In recent times, Ukraine has escalated its offensive against Russian military, energy, and industrial infrastructure, employing advanced long-range drones and missile technologies to counterbalance Russia's dominant military might. The successful deployment of the "Sub Sea Baby" drones in Novorossiysk illustrates Ukraine's advancing skills in underwater and naval warfare, highlighting a key evolution in the ongoing conflict in the Black Sea region.
