On Tuesday, health officials in the UK confirmed that ten individuals associated with a hantavirus incident linked to the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius will be relocated to the United Kingdom for preventive isolation.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicated that these individuals hail from the British overseas territories of Saint Helena and Ascension Island located in the South Atlantic. Health officials confirmed that these individuals had been isolating without exhibiting any symptoms.
Authorities underscored that the movement is strictly a precaution to avert any potential virus transmission.
The outbreak is associated with the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius, which recently traversed the South Atlantic, making stops at various isolated islands during its route.
Data from the cruise company’s website indicates that 32 passengers and one crew member disembarked at Saint Helena, while two others were medically evacuated via Ascension Island.
Details regarding the identities of those being moved to the UK have yet to be disclosed by the British government.
The UK Health Security Agency also emphasized that the overall risk to the broader public remains very low, with ongoing contact tracing and health monitoring of individuals linked to the cruise.
