UAE Commits $15 Million to Assist Sudan Refugees Amid Escalating Crisis

In a significant demonstration of its humanitarian dedication, the United Arab Emirates has pledged $15 million to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to assist refugees and displaced individuals in Sudan and surrounding areas. This announcement was made during the UNHCR Pledging Conference in Geneva which addresses the 2026 Global Appeal.

This initiative highlights the UAE’s sustained commitment as a pivotal donor in humanitarian crises worldwide. Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, pointed out the urgent need for unified support amidst a rising global displacement crisis stemming from conflicts, persecution, and climate-induced challenges.

Following the start of the conflict in Sudan in 2023, the UAE has taken a leading role in providing assistance, contributing nearly $784 million in relief. This positions the nation as the second-largest donor to Sudan after the United States, as per data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Over the last decade, from 2015 to 2025, the total aid provided by the UAE to Sudan has exceeded $4.24 billion.

The UNHCR Pledging Conference, which takes place annually at Geneva’s Palais des Nations, gathers member states to announce their voluntary contributions for the upcoming year. The funds raised are crucial for maintaining emergency response initiatives, particularly for vulnerable populations such as women and children greatly impacted by displacement crises.

By pledging predictable and timely humanitarian funding, the UAE is expected to bolster essential services including shelter, healthcare, and educational support, aiding in the stabilization of communities affected by ongoing conflicts.
