At the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates showcased stunning talent by winning two gold medals in the men's and women's 400-meter finals, reinforcing its status among Asia's athletic powers.
With these victories, the UAE calculated their overall medal count to three, as the championships continue until June 1. Earlier in the competition, Salma Haitham Al Marri secured a bronze in the women's hammer throw.
The highlight of the event occurred during the men's 400-meter final, where Sulaiman Abdulrahman made history by clocking a championship record time of 44.85 seconds. This extraordinary performance not only earned him gold but also established a personal best and redefined the record for the event.
Abdulrahman is now the first athlete in the Asian U20 Athletics Championships to complete the men's 400 meters in under 45 seconds. His impressive time surpassed the former championship record of 45.53 seconds, set by Aiyilikesi'er Wumai'er from China during the 2024 championship.
The UAE's additional gold came from Aminat Qamar Al-Din, who excelled in the women's 400-meter final, finishing in 52.72 seconds, a new personal best for her. Her achievement celebrates the rising strengths of the UAE’s athletics on the Asian platform.
The UAE Athletics Federation noted that Abdulrahman's record-breaking feat is among the pinnacle achievements of the championships. Not only did he earn gold, but he also engraved his name in the annals of Asian junior athletics.
Praising the athletes, Major General Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mur, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, described the two gold medals as a testament to the nation's enduring investment in sports development and athlete preparation.
He emphasized the consistent support offered by the UAE leadership to sports, as well as the contributions from the National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports in cultivating the next generation of elite athletes.
Dr. Al Mur remarked that the success in Hong Kong is the result of a strategic vision aimed at nurturing young talents and molding champions who can compete globally.
As the championships progress, the UAE team aims to expand on this success, striving to enhance an already impressive medal tally that highlights the country's growing prowess in Asian athletics.
