Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Ty France has won his first Gold Glove Award, being named the American League’s top defensive first baseman. The announcement was made on Sunday night, marking a major milestone in France’s career.
France, who played 124 games at first base, recorded a career-best nine defensive runs saved above average, showcasing his elite fielding ability throughout the season. In addition to his defensive prowess, he contributed a solid performance at the plate, slashing .257/.320/.360 with seven home runs and 52 RBI.
The Blue Jays acquired France at the trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins, in a deal that also included reliever Louis Varland. In return, Toronto sent prospects Kendry Rojas and Alan Roden to Minnesota.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., another standout first baseman for the Jays, was also nominated for the award but did not win. Fellow Blue Jays Alejandro Kirk (catcher) and Ernie Clement (third base, utility) were nominated as well, though they too missed out on the award this year.
This win highlights the Blue Jays’ growing emphasis on defensive excellence as the team continues to build a competitive roster for future contention.
