Trump's Greenland Meme Sparks Online Controversy

Post by : Bianca Hayes

US President Donald Trump has once again captured public attention regarding Greenland, this time via a trending internet meme. Known for his interest in acquiring Greenland, Trump shared an AI-created image showcasing him walking alongside a penguin.

The White House shared this image, depicting Trump and the penguin heading towards glacier-like mountains. The penguin waved a US flag, juxtaposed against a Greenland banner, paired with the caption “Embrace The Penguin.” This meme is a nod to the popular “Nihilist Penguin” trend from Werner Herzog's 2007 documentary Encounters at the End of the World.

However, the post triggered a wave of humor and critique. Social media users quickly pointed out that penguins do not inhabit the Arctic regions, as highlighted by journalist Pippa Crerar, emphasizing that these birds are exclusive to the Southern Hemisphere. Many mocked the post by sharing modified images featuring a polar bear instead of a penguin.

Trump has been sharing various AI-generated visuals related to Greenland recently. One depiction featured him alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio standing by a sign asserting that Greenland is a US territory. Another visual included an altered map expanding the US to envelop Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela.

Since his presidency began, Trump has advocated for the acquisition of Greenland, intensifying his remarks recently. He even hinted at imposing tariffs on select European nations and discussed gaining unrestricted access to Greenland for military purposes.

This meme debacle has gone viral, highlighting how Trump's Greenland aspirations are intertwining with the landscape of internet culture and igniting global reactions online.
