U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his backing for a newly established Palestinian technocratic entity that is set to oversee Gaza during a transition period. This entity, named the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, aims to manage civil affairs and promote stability in the area after a prolonged period of conflict.
According to Trump, this committee will function under the watch of an international organization dubbed the “Board of Peace,” which he will lead. The board is tasked with supervising Gaza’s governance throughout the transitional phase, with its complete member lineup to be revealed shortly.
This governing body will consist of 15 members and will be chaired by Ali Shaath, a former deputy minister specializing in economic and industrial development. The technocratic council is expected to prioritize restoring essential services, overseeing reconstruction efforts, and maintaining order, steering clear of direct political influences.
The proposal was endorsed by both Israel and Hamas in October as part of a wider ceasefire plan, though the peace remains tenuous, with ongoing violence reported from both sides since its initiation. Key issues include unresolved hostage situations, delays in reopening border crossings, and Hamas’ resistance to disarm.
Looking ahead, international mediators will face significant hurdles, such as negotiating Hamas’ disarmament, securing further Israeli troop withdrawals, and establishing an international peacekeeping unit to foster stability in Gaza.
Trump envisions that regional partners will collaborate on a comprehensive demilitarization plan, which he sees as critical for achieving enduring peace. Proponents view the technocratic government as a pragmatic move towards stability, while opponents fear that international control over Gaza's governance might compromise authentic self-rule.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, characterized by extensive destruction, displacement, and shortages due to months of hostilities. As the technocratic leadership begins to take form, there is lingering uncertainty about whether this transitional strategy can foster genuine calm and pave the way for a sustainable political resolution.
