Trump Arms National Guard in Washington Amid Crime Crackdown

Post by : Mina Carter

The United States is witnessing a rare and controversial move as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered National Guard troops patrolling the streets of Washington, DC, to carry weapons. This step is part of the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to tackle what it describes as "out of control" crime in the nation's capital.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump deployed approximately 2,000 troops to Washington and assumed direct control over the city’s police operations. The administration says this move is necessary to restore law and order in the city, which it claims has been experiencing high crime rates.

Initially, the Pentagon and the US Army stated that the troops deployed in Washington would not carry weapons. This policy aimed to keep the mission largely symbolic and focused on the protection of key landmarks rather than direct policing. However, the Pentagon recently issued a statement confirming that the National Guard troops “will soon be on mission with their service-issued weapons, consistent with their mission and training.”

At this stage, it remains unclear whether arming the National Guard will expand their role to active law enforcement or continue to focus on guarding major locations such as the National Mall and Union Station, the city’s main passenger rail hub. So far, the troops have not engaged in direct policing activities, and local law enforcement agencies have continued to handle all law enforcement duties.

Public Reaction and Local Concerns

The decision to arm National Guard personnel has been met with strong reactions from residents and city leaders. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser has not yet issued a public statement regarding the new directive.

However, residents have expressed widespread disapproval of the federal intervention. A recent poll conducted by the Washington Post in collaboration with the Schar School revealed that almost 80% of Washingtonians oppose both the presence of federal officers and National Guard troops, as well as the temporary takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department. Many residents view the deployment as unnecessary and disruptive, especially given that violent crime in Washington is reportedly at a 30-year low.

Despite the criticism, President Trump has consistently praised the mission. Speaking from the White House Oval Office, he claimed that the deployment has ensured “total safety” in the city. Trump also indicated that he is considering similar deployments in other Democratic-led cities, including Chicago, citing concerns over local leadership and law enforcement effectiveness.

Chicago Mayor Responds

Trump’s comments about potential deployment in Chicago have drawn criticism from city leaders. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated that he had received no official notification regarding a possible National Guard deployment in his city. Johnson expressed serious concerns that such an uncoordinated move could inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement and potentially undermine ongoing efforts to reduce crime in Chicago neighborhoods.

The mayor emphasized that the deployment would be “uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound,” suggesting that the approach taken in Washington should not be replicated without proper collaboration with city authorities.

National Emergency and Extended Deployment

President Trump has also indicated that he may declare a national emergency if the 30-day deployment period in Washington expires. “If I think we're in great shape here, that's one thing. But if I don't, I'm just going to say it's a national emergency. If I have a national emergency, I can keep the troops here as long as I want,” he said.

The administration has received support from several Republican-led states, including South Carolina and West Virginia, which have contributed troops to the mission. In addition, Trump announced plans to request $2 billion from Congress to fund projects aimed at beautifying Washington, following previous budget cuts totaling $1.1 billion earlier this year.

Arrests and Law Enforcement Achievements

The operation has reportedly produced tangible law enforcement results. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that over 700 arrests have been made since the deployment began, including 40 arrests in a single day. Authorities also reported the seizure of 91 illegal firearms during the operation.

While the Trump administration highlights these results as proof of the mission’s effectiveness, local officials continue to question the need for federal intervention. Mayor Bowser and other city leaders argue that Washington’s crime rates have already declined significantly and that local police forces are capable of maintaining public safety without federal troops.

The Controversy Continues

The deployment of armed National Guard troops in Washington, DC has ignited a heated debate over the balance between federal authority and local governance. While President Trump and his supporters view the mission as necessary for public safety, residents and city officials remain skeptical and wary of the potential impact on community relations.
