U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed that Taiwan's future is contingent upon the decisions made by Chinese President Xi Jinping, while also cautioning against alterations to the current state of affairs in the region.
In a recent interview, Trump remarked that Xi believes Taiwan is inherently part of China and that the trajectory of China's actions lies with him. However, he was explicit in stating that he would be “very unhappy” should China attempt to modify the status quo regarding Taiwan.
Trump stated he has conveyed his apprehensions to Xi and expressed a strong belief that China will refrain from military action towards Taiwan during his presidency, which lasts until 2029. He noted that although such a scenario could materialize under a future U.S. administration, he does not foresee it happening while he holds office.
These comments surfaced during a wider discussion on global conflicts, including the recent military operations of the U.S. elsewhere. Trump highlighted that the situation in Taiwan differs from other international disputes, asserting that Taiwan does not represent a direct threat to China.
China regards Taiwan as its territory and labels the issue as an internal concern. Beijing has not excluded the possibility of using force to assert control over the island. Conversely, Taiwan disputes China's claims, operating as a self-governing democracy.
Although the United States does not maintain formal diplomatic recognition of Taiwan, it stands as the island's most significant global ally. U.S. legislation mandates Washington to assist Taiwan in its defense, a persistent source of tension between the U.S. and China.
Despite rising regional anxieties, Trump has been non-committal in outlining how the U.S. might react should tensions rise. Instead, he has continued to advocate for dialogue, deterrence, and his conviction that no significant action will occur during his administration.
