Barcelona :

A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday as a suburban commuter train derailed near Barcelona, Spain, following the collapse of a containment wall onto the tracks after heavy rains. The driver sadly lost their life, while 37 passengers sustained injuries, with four in critical condition.

The derailment took place in Gelida, situated on the outskirts of Barcelona. The Catalonia regional fire service reported that the wall fell onto the tracks just moments before the train arrived, leading to the derailment. Fortunately, all passengers were evacuated safely.

Claudi Gallardo, an inspector with the fire department, confirmed that emergency crews acted swiftly. Approximately 20 ambulances and 38 firefighting teams were dispatched to the scene to provide assistance and conduct rescue operations.

This unfortunate derailment follows a recent high-speed train collision in southern Spain, which resulted in 42 fatalities, intensifying concerns about railway safety measures.

The commuter rail system in Barcelona has faced ongoing criticism regarding its funding and recurrent technical issues. In another event that same evening, train services between Blanes and Macanet-Massanes faced disruptions when a train axle derailed, as stated by the rail operator, Adif.

Authorities are currently investigating both events as discussions regarding infrastructure safety heighten in light of severe weather conditions.
