A devastating incident off the coast of The Gambia has left at least seven people dead, with numerous others still unaccounted for after a boat, carrying approximately 200 migrants, capsized. This tragic event took place near Jinack village in the North Bank Region shortly after midnight on Wednesday, as reported by the Gambian Defence Ministry.
Authorities have noted that the capsized vessel was later located stranded on a sandbank. To date, 96 passengers have been rescued, while search-and-rescue efforts are actively underway to find those still missing. This ill-fated boat was heading towards Spain’s Canary Islands, a treacherous route across the Atlantic Ocean that many African migrants undertake in hopes of reaching Europe.
The Gambian Navy is leading the rescue operation, utilizing multiple naval ships and assistance from local fishing boats. The specific type of boat involved has not been disclosed; however, such crafts are usually large wooden canoes that are overcrowded and unsuited for long ocean voyages stretching over 1,500 kilometers (900 miles).
Among those rescued, ten individuals are reported to be in critical condition and require immediate medical attention. The identities of several victims have yet to be confirmed, as some are not from The Gambia.
The Gambia has emerged as a significant departure point for West African migrants aiming to reach Europe through the Canary Islands. Recent agreements between the European Union and North African countries have limited irregular migration routes, leading more migrants to undertake the dangerous Atlantic crossing.
In just 2024, around 47,000 migrants reached the Canary Islands, while humanitarian organizations estimate that over 9,000 have perished attempting this perilous journey in recent years.
