Tragic Blast Near Delhi's Red Fort: 9 Lives Lost, 20 Wounded

New Delhi: A devastating explosion occurred near the Red Fort on Tuesday evening, resulting in the tragic loss of at least nine lives and injuries to around twenty others. The blast took place near a parked vehicle close to the historic site at approximately 6:40 PM, coinciding with a heavy influx of evening tourists.

Authorities report that the explosion emanated from a white car parked near the monument's main entrance. The force of the blast caused nearby vehicles to ignite and shattered glass windows of adjacent shops. Emergency services arrived promptly, transporting the injured to LNJP and RML hospitals for immediate medical attention.

Initial investigations point towards an improvised explosive device (IED) as the source. Key personnel from the Delhi Police Special Cell and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are leading the inquiry. Officials have retrieved metal debris and electronic parts from the blast site, which are being processed for forensic evaluation.

Given the nature of the incident, authorities have enacted the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) to explore potential terrorist connections. A robust security perimeter has been established around the Red Fort, and the monument will remain shut for the next three days. Increased security measures are also being implemented across critical areas such as India Gate, Parliament House, and key metro stations throughout the capital.

Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, present at the scene, confirmed the intentionality of the blast, indicating that all possibilities—including potential cross-border terrorism—are under investigation. “This was not an accident. We are categorizing it as an act of terror,” he emphasized.

Witnesses recounted scenes of disorder and fear following the explosion, with vendor Rakesh Sharma stating, “A huge explosion erupted, and flames along with smoke surged from the vehicle. People fled in all directions.”
