Thailand Launches Pre-Approval for Student Loans

The Thai government has launched the Student Loan Fund Pre-Approval system, effective from May 16, targeting funding opportunities for the 2026 academic year. This initiative is aimed at enhancing educational prospects for students facing financial hardships across the nation. It reflects a commitment to bridge social disparities and promote equal educational access for Thai youth.

According to Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, education remains a focal point for the nation’s advancement. The Student Loan Fund, commonly referred to as SLF, is crafted to assist those encountering financial barriers who aspire to pursue studies at secondary, vocational, or higher education levels.

The newly introduced Pre-Approved system will evaluate and approve eligible applicants prior to their formal loan requests. Emphasis will be placed on applicants holding state welfare cards, those previously aided by the Equitable Education Fund, and individuals from low-income families earning less than 360,000 baht per year. The initiative is particularly geared towards fields deemed essential for Thailand’s future growth.

As indicated, secondary and vocational students can access the system from May 16 to June 13, 2026. University students can submit their applications between June 1 and July 13, 2026. To proceed with loan applications in the DSL system, students must complete actions through the official Student Loan Fund portal.

Moreover, existing borrowers enrolled in the same institution can verify their loan disbursement requests from May 16 to August 31, 2026, via the DSL system. Students are encouraged to prepare necessary documents ahead of time to ensure a smooth application process.

The Pre-Approve system aims to streamline protocols and guarantee that financial help reaches truly needy students, mitigating uncertainties for families grappling with increasing educational costs and economic strains.

The Student Loan Fund further clarified that new borrowers encompass both first-time loan applicants and former borrowers transitioning to different educational levels or institutions. It’s vital for students to adhere to guidelines and timelines set by the fund.

Officials are hopeful that this new system will broaden educational access, enhance social mobility, and fortify the country’s future workforce by lifting students from disadvantaged backgrounds who might otherwise find it challenging to continue their studies.
