Thailand is advancing its efforts to modernize and elevate the safety of its railway infrastructure, as Deputy Minister of Transport Siripong Angkasakulkiat visited the State Railway of Thailand Electrified Train Company Limited to assess operations and set forth new policy initiatives.
During the visit at Bangkok Central Station, the deputy minister engaged with executives and staff from the Red Line suburban electric train operator. The government has underscored the significance of fostering a transport system that is modern, user-friendly, safe, and capable of propelling the country's future economic development.
Siripong during the meeting noted the effectiveness of the government’s flat-rate fare initiative, which enables passengers to utilize EMV contactless bank cards for affordable train travel. Reports indicate that public usage of these cards surged by over 106 percent since the program's rollout in December 2025.
The Ministry of Transport has tasked the State Railway of Thailand with collaborating with Krung Thai Bank to expand the number of EMV access gates at stations, responding to the rising demand from passengers. Officials aim to position the Red Line system as a premier example of modern public transportation in Thailand.
The deputy minister also emphasized the necessity for enhanced operational safety, refined service standards, and the increased adoption of technology and innovation. He noted that rail transport significantly eases traffic congestion, reduces air pollution, and assists Thailand in achieving its net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
SRT Electrified Rail Company announced the launch of a new initiative named “Year of Omotenashi Service,” focusing on hospitality, equitable treatment for passengers, and high international safety standards. The company is also working on enhancing feeder transport options connecting Red Line stations with surrounding areas through EV buses and diesel railcar services.
Furthermore, the railway operator is set to introduce a smart monitoring system aligned with “The Smart Railway Ecosystem” concept. Developed in collaboration with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, this project will integrate embedded technology within trains to monitor track and electrical systems in real time and bolster maintenance efficiency.
Company officials stated they would continue to provide updates on safety enhancements, passenger service improvements, and operational progress as Thailand strives to develop a faster, cleaner, and more reliable rail network for the public.
