Thailand's Education Minister Empowers Deputy for Key Roles

In a pivotal administrative shift, Thailand’s Ministry of Education aims to enhance system efficiency and accountability. This strategic decision is part of a wider initiative to streamline educational operations and promote swift policy adaptation across various sectors.

Education Minister Prasert Chantharawongthong has executed a formal delegation of substantial powers to Deputy Minister Akranan Kankittinant. This empowered role enables the Deputy Minister to undertake numerous administrative responsibilities, fostering a more flexible governance structure within the ministry.

The newly assigned authority encompasses the ability to issue directives, grant approvals, kickstart initiatives, and oversee critical departments. Among these are the Department of Learning Promotion, the Institute for the Promotion of Science and Technology, Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, the National Institute of Educational Testing, the National Scout Office, alongside the Office of National Education Standards and Quality Assessment. The strategy aims to expedite decision-making processes, particularly in lifelong learning and scientific education.

This development also highlights the government’s intent to modernize education by enhancing science and technology curricula, refining national assessment systems, and fostering extracurricular programs like scouting. By consolidating key operational responsibilities under the Deputy Minister, the ministry looks to promote a well-coordinated approach to policy implementation and institutional synergy.

Nevertheless, the order stipulates certain boundaries regarding the delegated authority. Decisions warranting royal endorsement, high-level policy considerations, legal regulations, and matters needing Cabinet or Prime Ministerial review will continue to reside solely with the Education Minister. This structure ensures that crucial decisions maintain necessary oversight at the highest governmental levels.

Moreover, the Deputy Minister is obligated to report back to the Minister upon fulfilling assigned tasks. This accountability measure is pivotal for ensuring transparency and maintaining a balance between administrative control and operational flexibility, thereby facilitating effective ministry functionality without compromising governance standards.

This order, which became effective on April 16, 2026, is anticipated to strengthen cooperation among educational agencies and enhance service delivery across the sector.
