Strengthening Ties: Taiwan and U.S. Forge Ahead in AI and Tech Security

Post by : Mina Carter

High-level discussions between Taiwan and the United States recently paved the way for a deeper collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), cutting-edge technology, drone development, and economic security. This continued partnership, originating during the Trump administration, underscores the strengthening strategic relationship between both nations, despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

Led by Jacob Helberg, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, and Taiwan’s Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin, currently visiting the U.S., the talks resulted in significant agreements, including the Pax Silica Declaration—a U.S.-initiated plan to secure AI and semiconductor supply chains—along with a pact aimed at enhancing economic security cooperation.

Recognized as a leader in semiconductor production critical to AI technologies, Taiwan is pivotal in advancing the AI revolution. The discussions also covered supply chain security, the certification of drone components, and collaboration concerning essential mineral resources for technology manufacturing.

Efforts were made to counteract economic coercion, enhance cooperation in third countries, and eliminate tax-related obstacles to boost U.S.-Taiwan investments. Taiwan has persistently pushed for a bilateral agreement to prevent double taxation, which would greatly facilitate cross-border investment.

Both parties emphasized the necessity of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for global economic security and prosperity. Other discussed topics included the protection of undersea communication cables, enhancing cooperation on low-Earth orbit satellites, and the expansion of training programs to foster high-tech talent.

Amid ongoing disputes, Taiwan has claimed that China is obstructing undersea telecom and internet cables, a charge that Beijing refutes. In response to potential disruptions, Taiwan is increasing reliance on low-Earth orbit satellites to ensure backup communication systems if cable infrastructure is compromised.

This bolstered U.S.-Taiwan relationship illustrates a strategic initiative to enhance cooperation in vital technology sectors and infrastructure security while navigating rising geopolitical tensions.
