Taiwan has asserted that China’s recent extensive military drills surrounding the island were strategically orchestrated to diminish escalating international backing for Taiwan while deflecting focus from economic and social challenges faced by Beijing. This assertion emerged from a new report released by Taiwan’s National Security Bureau during a session with lawmakers.
The report characterized the military maneuvers, named “Justice Mission 2025,” as far from ordinary exercises. Taiwan contends these operations served clear political purposes, strategically staged in response to the rising support for it from democratic nations globally.
In the course of these exercises, China launched multiple rockets in proximity to Taiwan and deployed numerous warships and military aircraft near the island, causing significant disruptions including the cancellation of many domestic flights in Taiwan. The scale of the maneuvers raised alarms among neighboring countries and Western allies who keep a vigilant eye on the security landscape of the Taiwan Strait.
According to Taiwan’s security agency, these drills represented China’s most comprehensive military operations yet in terms of geographical reach. The report asserted that Beijing aimed to counteract the growing international support for Taiwan, particularly from the United States, Japan, and Europe, while simultaneously intent on channeling domestic frustration, fueled by economic slowdown and societal issues, into nationalist sentiments by emphasizing foreign threats.
The report delineated China’s actions as part of a broader “hybrid” strategy that intertwines military pressure with economic tactics, cyber operations, and information warfare. Taiwan indicated that China has intensified these combined strategies to exert ongoing pressure on the island while testing the responses of other democratic nations.
Additionally, the report referenced remarks from Japan’s prime minister last year, cautioning that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could significantly endanger Japan itself, illustrating that the tensions in the Taiwan Strait are now recognized as critical for both regional and global security, beyond the confines of cross-strait relations.
China has rejected Taiwan’s allegations. At a press conference, the Taiwan Affairs Office of China stated that the drills were designated to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial unity, aimed at protecting the mutual interests of individuals on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
China continues to assert that Taiwan is part of its territory and has not excluded the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan vehemently disputes this claim, advocating its status as a self-governing democracy with the sole right to determine its future.
The report further cautioned that China utilized information warfare during the military exercises. Taiwan noted that Chinese state media, AI-generated content, and coordinated social media accounts proliferated messages intended to erode trust in Taiwan’s military and government, as well as undermine confidence in Taiwan’s president and its alliance with the United States.
In just five days, approximately 19,000 controversial messages circulated from hundreds of accounts across various social media platforms. Concurrently, Taiwan experienced a dramatic surge in cyberattacks, with government systems subjected to over two million attacks in the first couple of days of the drills. Taiwan has associated some of these cyber assaults with hacking groups believed to have links to China’s military.
Taiwan has emphasized that China has increasingly coordinated cyberattacks with military operations to disrupt digital infrastructures and diminish public morale. China has consistently denied any involvement in hacking activities.
From an editorial standpoint, the report illustrates how contemporary conflicts extend beyond conventional military actions. Control over information, cyber strategy, and political messaging are now significant elements. The situation in the Taiwan Strait continues to stand as one of the globe's most sensitive flashpoints, with potential ramifications for regional and global stability.
