Suvendu Adhikari's Historic Oath as Bengal's First BJP Chief Minister

In a landmark shift for West Bengal's political arena, Suvendu Adhikari, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, is on track to become the first Chief Minister from the BJP in the state. On Friday, a meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah led to a unanimous decision among newly elected BJP MLAs to choose Adhikari as their legislature party leader. Shah confirmed that all proposals received were strongly in favor of Adhikari's leadership.

Following this significant appointment, Adhikari, accompanied by prominent BJP figures such as Dilip Ghosh and Locket Chatterjee, visited the Lok Bhavan in Kolkata. There, he met Governor R.N. Ravi to formally claim the opportunity to establish the new government. With the BJP's clear legislative majority, an official invitation is anticipated shortly.

The swearing-in ceremony is set for Saturday at the revered Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, with numerous BJP senior officials, Union ministers, and chief ministers from NDA-governed states expected to attend. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are likely to be present, framing the event as a monumental moment in West Bengal's political history.

Adhikari's ascent marks a notable turn in Bengal's political dynamics. Initially with the Trinamool Congress, he shifted to the BJP before the 2021 elections, becoming a formidable opposition figure. His profile soared after claiming victory over Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency in 2021, cementing his stature within the BJP.
