While the cause of death remains officially undisclosed, it is reported that she had been dealing with ongoing health complications. Her demise has deeply impacted the Indian film and music community, with heartfelt tributes from industry peers and admirers flooding in.
Born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, Sulakshana emerged from a family immersed in music. She began her singing career at the young age of nine and quickly established herself as an accomplished playback singer. Her debut song, Saat Samandar Paar Se, featured in the 1967 film Taqdeer, a duet with the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, quickly gained popularity.
In 1976, her soulful performance of Tu Hi Sagar Tu Hi Kinara from the film Sankalp earned her a prestigious Filmfare Award, reinforcing her status as one of the defining voices of her time.
After her musical triumphs, Sulakshana transitioned to acting, making her Bollywood debut in 1975 with Uljhan. She starred in numerous iconic films such as Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandaan, and Waqt Ki Deewar, sharing the screen with legendary actors like Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Shatrughan Sinha.
