Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) in collaboration with Sphere Entertainment Co. has unveiled plans for Sphere Abu Dhabi, a transformative entertainment venue set to rise on Yas Island with a substantial investment of US$1.7 billion.

This will mark the first Sphere venue outside the U.S., poised to emerge as a significant draw for global visitors. Nestled strategically between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the venue will be surrounded by lush green spaces and conveniently located near other prime Yas Island attractions. Completion is targeted for the end of 2029.

Officials anticipate that this initiative will not only enhance tourism but also foster economic diversification while bolstering Abu Dhabi's status as an international entertainment hub.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, stated that the initiative showcases the emirate's long-term aspirations and robust global collaborations. He emphasized that Sphere Abu Dhabi will present Emirati culture, talent, and narratives to an international audience.

James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, expressed confidence in Abu Dhabi's vision and infrastructural capabilities, deeming it an ideal site for Sphere's global expansion. He highlighted that Yas Island is set to evolve into a pivotal location for immersive entertainment.

Sphere Abu Dhabi will cater to a variety of events, including immersive experiences, concert residencies, and flexible setups for sports, conferences, and product launches. Equipped with cutting-edge immersive technology, such as the landmark LED display called the Exosphere, large-scale visual spectacles will be a hallmark of this venue.

The capacity of the venue will accommodate up to 20,000 attendees, adjusted according to the event type, which will also stimulate job creation during its operational phase.

The venue aims to highlight Emirati artists and culture while featuring a range of international performances. It promises immersive experiences akin to those offered in Sphere Las Vegas, launched in 2023.

Positioned near Zayed International Airport, Sphere Abu Dhabi will benefit from excellent transport links and surrounding tourism facilities. This project will further solidify Yas Island's standing as a premier global entertainment center, alongside other developments such as Saadiyat Cultural District and the future Disney theme park resort.

Collaboration among various authorities, including Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Municipalities and Transport, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar, will ensure coordinated infrastructure and transportation planning to support this project and nearby developments.
