Oman's government is amplifying its backing for the handicrafts industry through an initiative spearheaded by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority. This program aims to empower artisans while ensuring the enduring sustainability of historical trades.

Focusing on the significance of handicrafts in the national economy, the initiative is committed to preserving Oman’s rich cultural identity. Officials have highlighted that these crafts contribute not just to heritage but also serve as vital income sources for various communities.

The initiative encompasses financial aid for establishing and sustaining workshops, providing funds for machinery and raw materials to enhance product quality and productivity.

Moreover, the program includes marketing and packaging support, enabling artisans to participate in exhibitions, thereby broadening their market reach and improving the promotion of their products.

Training plays a central role in this scheme, offering participants skill development and guidance on integrating modern techniques while upholding traditional craftsmanship. This approach aims to boost competitiveness in both local and global markets.

The initiative is available to both individual artisans and craft enterprises. To qualify, applicants need to be registered with the authority and possess the requisite licenses for their operations while adhering to specific eligibility conditions, including not having availed similar assistance in the previous two years.

Authorities have released a comprehensive guide to streamline the application process, ensuring that artisans can readily apply and benefit from the support provided.

The initiative spans a variety of traditional crafts, such as Omani daggers, silverware, palm products, perfumes, textiles, pottery, and leather goods, reflecting Oman's vibrant heritage that captures both local and international interest.

From 2022 to 2025, it is anticipated that nearly 3,000 beneficiaries will gain support through this program. With over 3 million Omani riyals allocated, the initiative is set to significantly bolster the handicraft sector’s growth.
