Shell Expands Portfolio with $16.4B Acquisition of ARC Resources

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Shell plc has finalized a definitive agreement to take over ARC Resources Ltd. in a deal valued at $16.4 billion. This strategic acquisition is a pivotal advancement in Shell’s ongoing mission to broaden its energy portfolio while reinforcing its footprint in North America.

ARC Resources plays a crucial role in the Montney shale basin, a vital energy region in Canada that extends across British Columbia and Alberta. By acquiring ARC, Shell will immediately benefit from production levels around 370 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (kboe/d), which includes both natural gas and liquids.

As per the company’s claims, the acquisition is slated to facilitate an annual production growth rate of approximately 4% up to 2030, when compared with 2025 benchmarks. This will empower Shell to boost its output while retaining a well-rounded energy portfolio.

Shell emphasized that this deal will markedly enhance its access to long-life, low-cost resources with minimized carbon intensity. The Montney basin is recognized for its efficient production processes and comparatively lower emissions, making it a valuable asset as energy firms transition towards cleaner, more sustainable practices.

The company is optimistic that this acquisition will provide substantial long-term value, ensuring consistent production and undergirding its global energy strategy for many decades ahead.
