Sheikh Sultan Unveils Don McCullin Photography Show in Athens

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chair of the Sharjah Media Council, has opened a significant photography exhibition in Athens, Greece. The exhibition, entitled “Life, Death, & Everything in Between,” features the work of the renowned photographer Sir Don McCullin.

Organized in collaboration with the Athens Photo World Awards and the annual Xposure International Photography Festival, the exhibition serves as a global photography platform backed by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau.

Exploring Exhibition Highlights

During the event, Sheikh Sultan explored the galleries and examined key pieces from McCullin’s extensive career of over fifty years. The photographs presented include striking depictions from conflict zones such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Lebanon, as well as serene landscapes from England, Africa, India, and Indonesia.

He commended the powerful humanitarian message embedded in McCullin’s work, which reflects both profound human suffering and resilience.

A Journey Through Life and Death

The exhibition offers a remarkable visual narrative tracing McCullin’s journey, beginning with his photographs in marginalized areas of London, transitioning through war zones, and concluding with serene natural vistas. His work powerfully captures raw human emotions and the stark realities of life.

Sir Don McCullin is celebrated as one of the leading documentary photographers globally. Throughout his career, he has witnessed wars and humanitarian crises, often in precarious situations. His unwavering dedication to truth and humanity persevered despite numerous challenges.

The alliance between the Xposure International Photography Festival and the Athens Photo World Awards underscores the vital role of photography in narrating human experiences and truths. It also showcases Xposure’s burgeoning global status as a premier platform for visual storytelling.

A Permanent Display in Greece

In a notable announcement, it was revealed that McCullin’s exhibition will become a permanent fixture at the MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography in Greece, ensuring that his legacy endures for future generations.

A Special Presentation

During the event, Sheikh Sultan presented Sir Don McCullin with a unique limited-edition Leica “Monochrom” camera, featuring the name and emblem of Sharjah, specifically created for the Xposure Photography Festival.

Touring the Acropolis Museum

Additionally, Sheikh Sultan visited the Acropolis Museum in Athens, touring its galleries while learning about its historic and archaeological significance.

As one of the world’s preeminent archaeological institutions, the museum spans over 25,000 square meters and contains more than 4,000 artifacts from Classical and Roman periods.

The exhibition is organized into three main sections: daily life in ancient Athens, the Parthenon sculptures, and Classical masterpieces like the iconic Caryatid statues.

Moreover, the museum is celebrated for its modern architecture, glass flooring that offers views of the Acropolis, and innovative lighting systems designed to preserve and showcase ancient marble artworks.
