Tennis icon Serena Williams, known for her seven Grand Slam titles, is poised to return to the Australian Open in 2026. The last time she competed in this event was in 2021, where she was eliminated in the second round by Italy's Sara Errani. Over the course of 21 tournaments, Williams has yet to claim the title, finishing as runner-up twice — once to her sister Venus in 2003 and again in 2017.
At the age of 45, Williams will set a new record as the oldest female competitor in the Australian Open's history, surpassing the previous record set by Japan's Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she competed in 2015.
Expressing her enthusiasm about her return, Williams stated, “I’m thrilled to be back in Australia and can’t wait to compete this summer. I have so many wonderful memories from this place, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to such a significant location in my career.”
Williams has also accepted a wildcard for the Hobart International, a preparatory event that begins on January 12. The lineup will include other champions like Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu.
With her comeback, Williams continues to motivate tennis fans globally, showcasing that passion and determination can defy age and keep one competitive at the pinnacle of sport.
