Senegal’s football federation has strongly denied reports claiming that delays in the national team’s travel plans for the FIFA World Cup were caused by a dispute with head coach Pape Thiaw. The federation said the rumors spreading on social media and in several media reports were false and insisted that the situation was linked only to logistical and administrative issues.
The controversy began after reports suggested that Senegal’s departure to the United States for World Cup preparations had been delayed by several hours because of tensions between coach Pape Thiaw and the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF). Some reports claimed the coach was unhappy over ongoing contract negotiations and had refused to travel with the squad.
However, the federation quickly released an official statement rejecting those claims. The FSF said the delay happened because of visa processing and flight authorization problems, not because of disagreements with the coaching staff. Officials added that the national team remains united ahead of the tournament and that there is no internal conflict affecting preparations.
“The federation categorically denies the false rumors suggesting that the head coach refused to travel because of issues related to his contract,” the statement said. The FSF also explained that discussions regarding Thiaw’s contract are normal professional matters and have not affected the team’s schedule or atmosphere.
Pape Thiaw became Senegal’s head coach in late 2024 and has remained an important figure for the national side. Under his leadership, Senegal continued to be one of Africa’s strongest football teams and entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup with high expectations from supporters across the continent.
The situation gained even more attention because Senegal has already faced several tense moments in recent months following the controversial Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco earlier this year. That match created headlines after disputes over refereeing decisions and protests from Senegal’s players and officials during the game.
Despite recent controversies, the federation said the players, coaching staff, and officials are fully focused on preparing for the World Cup. Senegal is expected to play important warm-up matches in the United States before beginning its official tournament campaign later in June.
Football analysts believe the federation moved quickly to stop rumors from damaging team morale before the start of the competition. Many supporters also welcomed the clarification, saying the team should remain focused on football instead of off-field controversies.
Senegal is preparing for its fourth FIFA World Cup appearance and is considered one of Africa’s strongest representatives in the tournament. Fans are hoping the squad can make another deep run after the country’s impressive performances in previous international competitions.
The federation said minor travel delays are common during large international tournaments and stressed that the issue has now been resolved. Officials also promised that the team’s preparations would continue normally as the players arrive in the United States for training and friendly matches ahead of the World Cup opener.
