Selangor's efforts to close pig farms in Tanjong Sepat are nearing completion, with around 11,000 pigs remaining as operations wrap up. Currently, approximately 30 farms continue to function temporarily as part of the gradual closure strategy mandated by the state government earlier this year.
Datuk Izham Hashim, the Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Executive Councillor, shared that the shutdown process has been unfolding since February after officials recognized that some livestock were not yet mature enough for removal when the eviction notice was issued. In this final phase, no new piglets are being introduced to the farms.
The state government plans to transfer all remaining livestock to the slaughterhouse in Rawang in a structured manner, with expectations to finalize the closure before stricter enforcement kicks in come July.
Recent discussions took place between Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin to strategize the transition. The focus is shifting toward converting the 141.6-hectare site into high-value agricultural enterprises once pig farming concludes.
A special meeting set for June 9 aims to assess the state and federal support mechanisms for affected farmers, including potential land restoration and initiatives to assist 87 operators in pivoting to alternative agricultural or economic avenues.
Reports indicate that all pig farming activities in Tanjong Sepat are slated to halt by the end of June, with enforcement measures commencing officially on July 1, following a grace period allowing operators to wind down operations and sell off remaining livestock.
This closure results from a decree by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who opposes pig farming across several districts in the state. This directive has brought significant changes to the local livestock sector.
Officials have stressed the importance of managing the closure process thoughtfully to ensure a blend of agricultural restructuring, economic sustainability, and social considerations for all workers and business owners affected by these changes. Plans for long-term area development will emphasize more sustainable and diversified agricultural practices.
