Premier Scott Moe of Saskatchewan has just concluded a vital trade mission to the United States, where he convened with high-ranking officials from President Donald Trump's administration to seek avenues for reviving the paused Canada–US trade talks.
While in Washington, D.C., Moe conferred with U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. Each meeting concentrated on identifying pathways to restart formal conversations between the two nations.
Moe indicated that his objective was to advocate for Saskatchewan’s economic interests while backing national initiatives to regain momentum in Canada–US trade relations. He highlighted that the trip was discussed soon after President Trump declared an end to negotiations, which followed a controversial advertisement funded by Ontario that criticized the Trump administration. Since that announcement, dialogue has stalled.
Prior to his departure, Moe consulted with Prime Minister Mark Carney and federal minister Dominic Leblanc, who is in charge of Canada–US trade, ensuring his mission was in sync with federal strategy. He noted the delicate nature of relations between the two countries, including issues surrounding Canada’s potential purchase of F-35 fighter jets.
Moe asserted that the renewed diplomatic approach under Prime Minister Carney is reinforcing Canada’s international standing. Nonetheless, he admitted he did not obtain explicit feedback regarding the timeline for a resumption of trade talks, implying a period of patience may be necessary before progress can be realized.
The Saskatchewan NDP Opposition criticized Moe’s trip, questioning both its timing and overall impact.
